The local town of Dunbar provides excellent resources for golfing enthusiasts as well as having an indoor swimming pool with wave machine, leisure facilities, a gym and highly acclaimed restaurants, bars and shops.
Along the coast are numerous beaches, walkways, coastal paths and unspoiled countryside providing a ramblers haven for adventurous spirits, and a perfect holiday resort for surfers, body boarders and snorkelers.
The site of the main house is close to the location of the Battle of Dunbar and the grounds themselves have a rich history. The mount from where Cromwell commanded the battle is located in the garden and a beautiful cedar tree in the park was planted in 1878 by Queen Victoria in memory of her beloved Albert.

Things To See & Do
Head Gardener’s Cottage is only a few minutes from the town of Dunbar, which has two excellent links golf courses. In fact, golf enthusiasts are spoilt for choice in East Lothian, and as well as the two courses in Dunbar, many more golf courses can be discovered travelling in either direction along the coast.
For the more adventurous amongst us John Muir Way provides extensive links to marked coastal pathways for keen walkers. The East Lothian coastline also has an abundance of wonderful beaches, ideal for swimming or the occasional spot of sea fishing. Boat trips can also be arranged from Dunbar harbour. There are also excellent leisure and gym facilities at Dunbar leisure centre.
The Museum of Flight (only a fifteen minute drive from Head Gardener’s Cottage) provides tours of Concorde and hosts many historic and modern aircraft for flight enthusiasts. The Seabird Centre in North Berwick, about half an hour from Dunbar has an excellent visitors centre, and the town itself is full of stylish shops and fashionable eateries.
Dunbar plays host to some highly acclaimed and award winning restaurants, such as the Creel Sea Food Restaurant and the Rocks which overlooks the harbour in Dunbar. There are also excellent road and rail links to the the major towns of Musselburgh, Haddington and the city of Edinburgh. All can be reached within half an hour by road or rail. Other attractions well worth a visit, are both the local markets in Haddington and East Fortune, and the race course at Musselburgh which hosts twenty-six race meetings annually.
